History in the Making

Someone wise once said, ‘If your life is worth living, it’s worth writing down.”

I think similarly if your audio has value to you, it’s worth preserving. That’s why when Gregg Taylor of Decoder Ring Theatre said in one of our interviews that he’s been uploading his shows to archive.org it made me consider that it’s probably time to do the same with the Sonic Society. It’s a large process to go back and even upload Season 12, but that’s been accomplished. We’ll go backwards and fill in the last couple years for sure.

There’s untold generations that should have a real understanding where and who started this amazing movement- the modern audio drama medium. And we’ve had front row seats in the past decade. Thank you everyone for your encouragement through the years!

His Voice was “Magically Delicious”

13Anderson1Obit-master675Great loss to the world of radio drama and voice acting on April 10th, when Arthur Anderson passed away at the age of 93. The New York Times article reported:

Arthur Anderson, who performed on radio as a teenager with Orson Welles’s Mercury Theater and appeared on Broadway, in films and on television, but whose most enduring role was as the voice of Lucky Charms cereal’s leprechaun, died on Saturday in Manhattan.

As the last of the Golden Age of Radio begins to fade into the distance, I find myself thinking back as to how much of an impact they made, not just on those children who grew up with radio and radio drama, but the grandchildren, and the great grandchildren. My parents loved radio plays and bought LP’s for me to listen to in my formative years. Even now, archive.org keeps putting more and more old time radio shows into the public domain. Go through the available Mercury and Campbell’s Playhouse Theatres and have some time to listen to Anderson’s salad years.

Rest well, sweet prince!

The Best Kept Non-Secret

635944127228984985-Orson-Welles1-jpgAccording to Marc Saltzman, the web’s best kept secret is free radio dramas. If that’s the case, everyone in The Sonic Society has double-ultra level 45 top secret clearance.

We don’t mind that the world is catching up. We love the company!

One of my personal favourites is Boxcar 711 Old Time Radiowhich pumps show after show on the feed. Once you subscribe, your challenge will be to keep up!

But Mr. Saltzman names off some of the other favourite sites like archive.org or RelicRadio.com

Read through the list to Mr. Saltzman and send him a note letting him know that you’ve always been a fan of the old and new radio drama you can find right here.

In the meantime, I’m going back to reminisce to last season’s tenth anniversary special series Sonic Echo. Good times!

Are You Ready?

OTRR_Certified_High_AdventureThanks to audio connoisseur from Broken Sea Audio, Bill Hollweg, we were reminded recently of archive.org’s collection of High Adventure!

Feeling like you need a little excitement in your life? Give High Adventure a try!

High Adventure is sometimes billed “The Mutual Network’s answer to Escape!” In fact, the Mutual anthology premiered on March 1, 1947. There were audition episodes for Escape at the end of February and the middle of March, 1947, but the program did not begin regular broadcast until July. Some reviewers consider Escape to be Suspense’s little brother. In that line of thinking, High Adventure could be thought of as a distant cousin.

Sonic Echo may be gone for the ages, but OTR is still going strong over at archive.org!
