Fangoria to Launch Dreadtime Stories as Radio Dramas.

October, 2011 launch scheduled for an original, fully produced audio series.

Carl Amari, the Producer of the Twilight Zone Radio Dramas, will add a new radio drama series to his production slate.  In co-venture with Thomas DeFeo, CEO of Fangoria Magazine, the new dramatic radio series will be called Fangoria’s Dreadtime Stories and feature Malcolm McDowell as host and narrator.

“Malcolm is a remarkable talent and brings an edgy commentary to what has always been a very dramatic blend of mystery, horror, science-fiction and dark humor.”  Amari said.  “We’re in production now and will deliver a new episode every month of very contemporary audio productions.  We plan to push the limits from the storylines through the production values.  Fangoria’s Dreadtime Stories is set to thrill and chill the audience.”

The original scripts are written by top writers in fantasy, horror and science-fiction including Dennis Etchison, The Fog and Max Alan Collins, The Road to Perdition.

Collins, recent winner of an Audie for the Amari “Mike Hammer” production The Little Death, agrees. “The Fangoria brand name gives a writer permission to break down the barriers of horror in a way that wonderful old-time radio shows could never dare.  The ability to do extreme violence is one aspect, but also adult subject matter and of course dark humor — my stories tend to be character-driven, with the violence coming in like exclamation points, and with the scares infused with nervous laughter.”

Amari is a 7-time Audie Award Winner with more than 30-years experience in the entertainment business.  He has produced feature films in addition to numerous radio dramas from Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer to The Twilight Zone Radio Dramas starring Stacy Keach and now, Fangoria’s Dreadtime Stories.

“I should caution you, Dreadtime Stories are not for the feint of heart.”  Amari said.  “We’re appealing to a young and very hip audience and they know this genre better than anybody.  The shows are not just edgy, but they have been written and produced to keep you on the edge of your seat.  Our goal is to be a contemporary version of what “Lights Out” was to radio in the 1930’s and 40’s — the scariest of the scary when it comes to audio drama.”

The one-hour episodes will be broadcast multiple times each month on Sirius XM from coast-to-coast, and streamed as a podcast to fans worldwide at Fangoria.com anytime during the course of the month the episode is premiered.  Then at the end of the month, the current episode will be replaced by a new episode.  All episodes, past and present will be available for digital download from Fangoria.com for $1.99 with special features.  Fans can also PDF download each episodes’ radio drama script – the same scripts that are used by Malcolm McDowell and the supporting actors – at Fangoria.com for free.

Each episode will feature original music scores composed by Chris Alexander, the Editor-in-Chief of Fangoria Magazine and an accomplished composer.  According to Alexander, “Music should always be a character in horror, a vital tool to create mood, atmosphere…and dread. Using various traditional instruments, analog electronics and even found household items, the music I’m creating for Dreadtime Stories is a bit abstract and experimental; landscapes of sound designed to be listened to in dark rooms in the dead of night…“

Sound design is by Cerny/American Creative, a seasoned team of sound-designers for feature films and numerous national and international productions including Amari’s Twilight Zone Radio Dramas.  “The objective is to create theater of the mind.”  This according to JoBe Cerny, President and CEO of Cerny/American Creative.  “The right combination of performance, music and sound-design can create a multi-million dollar production in the mind of the listener.  The highest level of production values will carry through every line, and every scene.”

Fangoria is a well-known and trusted name in the mystery and horror genre and has grown its fan base into the millions since its inception in 1978.  “This is a terrific way for us to extend and expand the Fangoria brand and the Dreadtime Stories experience.”  Said Thomas DeFeo, CEO of Fangoria Magazine and Executive Producer of Fangoria’s Dreadtime Stories.  “Fangoria is currently the most widely-read horror-themed publication in the world and each issue will feature a write-up on current and upcoming episodes of the new monthly radio series.”

Malcolm McDowell shared Amari and DeFeo’s enthusiasm.  “I’m in my favorite spot as the omniscient narrator looking down on endless and relentless suspense.  It’s great fun and wonderful theater.”

Steve Nubie, a seasoned writer for the Twilight Zone Radio Dramas and a contributing writer to the new series sees McDowell’s role as critical to the stories.  “Malcolm’s ability to come in and out of the script with commentary, asides and ironic observations brings an element of dark humor to the stories.  Given the intensity of some of the storylines, comic relief is a great opportunity to catch your breath.”

The first episode, “The Late Shift”, was written by Dennis Etchison and will premier October 1st, 2011.  David Pasquesi (Angels and Demons) stars in the lead role.

Fangoria Magazine will feature a three-page article to help launch the series in their October issue.
