The Andy Holmes selection is tonight’s feature as we get into episodes one to five. David is your host and Jack is back next week. So will his back be back.
In an IBT article entitled, BBC Radio to air uncensored adaptation of Erica Jong’s feminist novel featuring sex scenes BBC is dramatizing for radio scenes from the famous novel Fear of Flying. BBC began to air scenes last night, as they break the novel into five different episodes.
Fear of Flying was a controversial book for iconic feminist Jong, as it depicts sex scenes spattered with expletives. Concern is noted from some listeners that while adult programming conventionally occurs after 9 PM on television stations, radio has no such requirement. So listeners are requested to be aware of the content.
The BBC has made arrangements to carry the famous Twilight Zone Radio Dramas from producer Carl Amari. For those of us familiar, Stacy Keach’s rich voice fills the role of narrator once held by the iconic Rod Serling for the original television series. In an io9 article, we discover that ten episodes will be released featuring the voice work of such well known actors as Jane Seymour, Jim Caviezel, Michael York, Malcolm McDowel and many others.
Curiously, the first episode An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge was originally a silent French short film that Rod purchased the rights for and modified for the Twilight Zone. So fascinating to see how the voiceless is given voice in a new generation. But that’s the power of the Twilight Zone, and the power of radio drama. Look for the episodes on BBC 4 coming soon!
The Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch School of the Arts has an exciting opportunity for students to create professional radio drama. HarperAudio worked with Goldberg to create a contest for burgeoning audio dramatic writers.
According to this NYU News article:
Undergraduates, graduate students and alumni who graduated no earlier than 2013 can submit their pieces to the NYU Radio Play Contest via email by March 1. Submissions will be judged based on narrative quality and writing style, among other criteria.
Ana Maria Allessi, Vice President of Digital Innovation and Publisher at HarperAudio believes that the submissions should be natural extensions of the students’ current work. The winner will receive 25 percent of net profits of total digital recordings sold and 10 percent of total CD units sold. HarperCollins, a publishing company since the 50’s has all the specified terms and conditions and exclusive rights distribution rights to the winning piece.
We’re back to Sandbox Radio Live to complete our “Spring Fling” with their live performance. How goes your work in NADSWRIM? Have you completed your writing quest this year? Only 2 weeks more to go!
The genius of Carl Stalling has long been accepted. Often considered to be one of the most innovative composers of the 20th century. Sometimes forgotten is the Costello to Stalling’s Abbott- that of Tregoworth Edmond Brown . “Treg” as he was called (although I’d be tempted to call him “Doc Brown” myself), was a brilliant composer himself, and an article from Neatorama called The Sound Effects Genius Behind the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies will give a look at the amazing man and his inventive work. As audio drama producers everywhere tinker with the right sound, imagine Treg recording live bits, placing sounds together from Foley in his cabinet or rummaging through old film clips. However you put it, the success of the Warner Brother Cartoons had as much to do with the sound of the shorts as it did with the visuals!
Dear Sonic Society Members,
You rock! David and I know you rock. For over a decade you’ve been the most patient, dedicated, and growing fans sharing the explosion of modern audio drama or radio drama, or pulp audio or sonic cinema whatever you’ve wanted to call it to people you love.
And you’ve done it again. We rarely look at our stats. We’re not interested in how much we’re growing, but rather that we keep bringing you the best that is out there. However, this past show, we noticed a massive spike. How much of a spike? After a pretty low January over all, we’ve had over a hundred thousand downloads from our podcast in in less than a week all surrounding Valentine’s Day.
So with apologies to a murdered saint, we love you too. Thanks so very much!
Jack and David
