What Could Have Been if we didn’t pull a Bono

(With thanks to Bill Hollweg from Broken Sea for passing this gem on)

From the Duke Law site:

http://www.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/pre1976

This site celebrates “Public Domain Day” the first of every year – Unfortunately, since the advent of the Sonny Bonno Public Domain Deprivation Act, there has been little to celebrate.

And those who attempt to rein in the few morsels of PD which escaped the net receive labels such as “Pirate” by others who may not consider this status relevant.

A thought for the group:

As the end of the Bonno extension approaches at the end of this decade, it may be worth anticipating that plans may be afoot to effectuate a further extension. Perhaps such plans may be opposed by drawing attention to the politicians who deprive a deserving public of their cultural heritage.

Another worthy step: Plant more trees.

CBC and Audio Drama Under Siege

I grew up with the CBC. I can honestly say that much of my love of Audio Drama was ignited by this network. CBC Radio was on first thing in the morning, and I remember listening to shows on weekends, and in the evening. CBC kept me informed and grew my understanding of Canada, the United States, and the World. CBC is family to me. Nothing more and nothing less.

And because it is family, CBC has kept me comforted during long lonely drives, rides across the country where everything was unfamiliar- CBC was home.

So I’m asking, from me, Jack Ward, that you support this initiative. CBC STILL keeps me, many Canadians here and abroad, and citizens from all around the world informed, entertained, and connected- ESPECIALLY now through their podcasts. As a public broadcaster its been able through the generations to create some of the best new audio drama in the world, train some of the most exciting new talent, and annoy politicians and private businesses because their business has been reporting the truth.

Help protect one of these last bastions of the public, please?

BB See Less

In a recent article on The Daily Telegraph Gillian Reynolds despairs in the slow choking out of the BBC’s audio drama department. In fact, the department will now be merged with “documentaries”.

Does the BBC not realize what they are losing? Audio drama across the Internet has been steadily on the rise. It has not been diminishing, it has been gaining ground with old fans and a new generation of listeners.

Please join me and others who love the BBC on the Speak Up For Radio Drama Now! facebook group and have your voice heard!

The Savage Sound of Conan

I’ve been reading some great classic Conan comic books, and remembering when Broken Sea did the equally amazing audio drama adaptations of  the public domain stories of Robert E. Howard– that is, until CPI threatened legal action on a public domain story.

Well for those who are interested, the barbarian is back. In a collection of Public Domain stories by Howard.

Happy Birthday Bill Hollweg, writer and producer of the Conan audio dramas. My sword arm is always at the ready!
