The Martians Attack Again!

santaclausmartians… Or rather they have settled for kidnapping Santa! That’s right, Lions Den Theatre and Dartmouth Players present “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians- the Radio Play”. The holiday favourite was adapted into a live show radio drama which was fun for the whole family. Ginny, Rory and Jack had a ball laughing at the great balls of cheese as this B-flick script was expertly rendered into a live performance. Congratulations all!

Adapted by Keith Morrison from the much over-looked film of the same name, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians will bring a little family friendly sci-fi into your holidays as we present an old-timey radio style version of this classic Christmas comedy, complete with costumes and live sound effects.

Our star-studded cast includes: Colleen MacIsaac, Dan Bray, Dan Roy , Jenny Trites, Jesse Robb, Maggie Hammel, Mark Penny, Matt Downey, Melanie Patten, Sean Skerry, Shawn Maggio

Aurotica

When I created the Audio Drama Ratings System for audio producers everywhere to be a helping hand in identifying various content warnings for listeners, I was aware that audio drama is the most intimate of mediums. Just try listening to the sounds of movie lovemaking scene at some point, you’ll notice its far more X-rated in your head than it is when you open your eyes and match the visuals.

Aural Sex is not something new, and actually has a pretty large audience. as AuralS describes in this New York Times article.

Whatever way you make your audio, even if it’s Aurotica (TM), give your listeners a clue as to what to expect, and they’ll appreciate it!

Bring Back the Trans-Atlantic!

hepburnIf you’re a fan of the fast-paced, hard-clipped, almost-English accents of the 20’s and 30’s, you’ll remember it as Trans-Atlantic or Mid-Atlantic accent. Especially effective for enunciating in Audio Drama, it has a kind of machine gun speed comedic style which is sadly missing. While many people can do a great parody of the Trans-Atlantic, superior usage of it, like Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby, has long been lost (kind of like our wonderful audio adaptation!). We at the Society think it’s about time to bring it back. Check out Brainstuff‘s little video on the accent, and start practicing, see!

Ear-ly Tales of Horror

earsWhat’s creepier than cover art of a bunch of floating ears?

Erin Kohn from Indiewire interviews the Glass Eye Pix gurus- Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid, to talk about their third season of audio horror “Tales From Beyond the Pale”. Both gents are fans of the medium and especially of the power of telling a scary story in which the visuals are all in the mind. Have a look at the interview… If you dare!
