Sonic Summerstock Playhouse 12.7: Double Feature: The Shadow- The Bells of St. Peters and The Shadow’s Revenge

Another fantastic creation from the Mutual Broadcasting System was “The Shadow”. And the Shadow Recreation Society on youtube has been hard at work to recreate these grand episodes! “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” The opening lines of the “Detective Story” program captivated listeners and are instantly recognizable even today. Originally the narrator of the series of macabre tales, the eerie voice known as The Shadow became so popular to listeners that “Detective Story” was soon renamed “The Shadow,” and the narrator became the star of the old-time mystery radio series, which ran until 1954. This week the Recreation Society recreates “The Bells of St. Peters” and “The Shadows Revenge” in a special Playhouse double feature!

Digital Digressions

The Nepascene has a series of digressions in this article which thrills in the memories of old time radio. Among the great musical hits the author, Tim Thumb,  remembers, there’s these fine gems of OTR:

Then, in junior high at a brand new apartment building my mom and I moved into, I discovered “CBS Radio Mystery Theater,” with host E.G. Marshall.

You can listen to many episodes (of varying quality) here. I highly recommend that you do.

Having listened whenever we could find a classic radio show with my gramps – “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” “Fibber McGee and Molly,” “The Shadow,” “Buck Rogers” – I’d already developed a pretty intense love of radio plays.

But “CBS Radio Mystery Theater” was new! It was a first-run show and current! It featured stars like Fred Gwynne (whom I knew from “Car 54, Where Are You?” and “The Musters” and you’ll know as the judge from “My Cousin Vinny”), Ed Ames, Ralph Bell, Joe Campanella, Richard Crenna, and tons more as voice actors. It was a glorious discovery, and the station it was carried on was a country format in the evening leading up to the show, which aired at midnight (I’d have that earphone in, sneaking a listen to avoid an ass whoopin’, and fully prepared to be draggin’ ass the next morning!). Since I always tuned in early so as not to miss the creaking door and “BUM BUM BUMMMMM” opening, radio is also where my love for outlaw country was born.

The Final Act Ensemble returns for another installment of nostalgic radio programming, presented in two acts. Listening to HUNT the TRUTH provoked nostalgia in me, bringing back those memories of The Shadow. In some way, it felt as though I was a child again. Radio Dramas and Audio Series are more effective and popular than most people today would think. At times, if executed perfectly, can be just as much if not more entertaining than movies. I say that because unlike movies where it is unfolding before your eyes, Audio alone leaves visualization to you and you alone allowing your imagination to be mesmerized by the drama you’re hearing.

And I can honestly say, HUNT the TRUTH more than exceeded in delivering us a dramatic and thrilling tale about the Halo universe as we know it.
