A new Facebook group appreciating classic old-time radio from the north : Canadian Old Time Radio. One of the shows was a five-episode series called Nazi Eyes on Canada. Rumour in the group is that there are six episodes but one was lost. Have a listen back to 1942… in simpler, yet dangerous times.

The Bill Hollweg Memorial Sonic Summer series is set! With gratitude to the folks at Audio Drama/Radio Drama Lovers Facebook Group, and to the big wigs at Broken Sea Audio for their kind permission, Sonic Summer will have two features a week. Please join us as each week we’ll assemble a panel of roundtable guests to talk about the feature and share their memories before we play our episode(s) for the night.

The indomitable Richard Summers (aka Captain Radio) posted an awesome link in Facebook the other day.
Global Map of Accents is a huge project that has audio recordings of people from various parts of the world so that audio voice actors can get a feel for the accent of the region. This is a phenomenal tool for those of us trying to inhabit a place in their characters. Try it out!
If you talk to people who have been making audio drama for years there are two things that frustrate them the most:
- people who think that they have single-handedly brought back radio drama from the grave
- people who don’t recognize the amazing trailblazers in the audio drama movement
We read this time and time again from Audio Drama Talk and the Facebook group we created back in 2009, the Audio Drama/Radio Drama Lovers Facebook Group. Member Jodi Ellyn brought us this New York Times article: And the Awards for Best Audio Fiction Go to…
The article refers to the Sarah Awards from Sarah Lawrence College to honour the best in Audio Fiction.
We love more light shone upon the audio drama world, but you can imagine our concern when the author, Joshua Barone made some erroneous assumptions about AD.
For example, Mr. Barone said, “…Sarah Awards, billed as the first award ceremony for audio fiction.” but long time listeners know that The Audie Awards and The Mark Time Awards are two far more well known awards.
We hope that Ann Heppermann, a founder of the Sarah Awards will take some time to listen to what’s out there, and realize we have a very robust community of audio drama already happening in the 21st century, and we welcome your participation.
With thanks to the awesome twosome over at Audio Drama Production Podcast and their facebook group page, here’s a super look at the eternal problem for all of us audio producto-philes (so maybe that’s not a word, but it should be!).
Aaron Brown’s excellent sound page has a fantastic article on how to make a great sound environment. Have a read and discover How to Build Your Own Acoustic Treatment Panels for Under $30.
All around the world, we celebrate our very first WORLD AUDIO DRAMA DAY!
Thanks so much to Sibby Wieland, David Jarvis, Sonia James from Sound Stages Radio who came up with the original idea and have worked so hard to get the word out. And special thanks to Pete Lutz from Narada Radio Company and Fiona Thraille from Cooperantem Radio for all their work and interest in promoting this celebration on Facebook and through the rest of social media.
How can you celebrate?
Here’s some things to consider:
1. Share a radio drama with your family tonight. Turn off all the cell phones, other technology and extraneous lights and enjoy a drama.
2. Share an audio play at dinner with a loved one.
3. Find your favourite audio theatre episode and listen while you drive to work.
4. Download some shows you’ve always wanted to listen to, but never had the chance for your workout session today.
5. Send around a link to your friends with the twitter tag #HappyWorldADD of your favourite shows from modern audio theatre
6. Talk to people about your favourite shows.
7. Clean the house or dishes old school with an audio drama playing.
8. Go for a nice long walk timed to an audio pulp production!
9. Bake some holiday food while listening to an audio show.
10. Burn some CD’s of some awesome audio drama and leave it randomly for people to find.
In whatever way you intend to celebrate today, have fun doing it and let us know!
Find the World Audio Drama Facebook Community and Twitter and we’ll see you- out in the world!
After a harrowing near week, the EVP server is back online again, which means for those who are interested not only is Electric Vicuña Productions website back up, but Jack J. Ward‘s woefully neglected site of writing news, as well as a myriad of behind the scenes projects that we keep under careful lock and key for the future.
What are those things you say? Well, script databases of notes, administrative checklists and workflow applications to aid in the day-to-day collections and operations. It’s pretty impressive, some of the projects that have been shepherded along the way.
In the meantime, if you’re hankering to join something, why not meet up at the Facebook group for Electric Vicuña Productions? Major announcements for new productions will show up there too!
And thanks for your patience!
Jack 🙂
In a recent article on The Daily Telegraph Gillian Reynolds despairs in the slow choking out of the BBC’s audio drama department. In fact, the department will now be merged with “documentaries”.
Does the BBC not realize what they are losing? Audio drama across the Internet has been steadily on the rise. It has not been diminishing, it has been gaining ground with old fans and a new generation of listeners.
Please join me and others who love the BBC on the Speak Up For Radio Drama Now! facebook group and have your voice heard!
