Silent Films and Films that are Dark

I’m always fascinated with how Audio Drama compares, contrasts and connects with other media. This fantastic piece on how silent movies sing when the original orchestral music is played in concert with the film. Music has a powerful effect on the way we take in stories. It’s fascinating that no matter whether you see your stories primarily, or take them in through the ear. Music can provide the mood that draws in the tension of a scene, or the comedy of a moment. Sharon Bee‘s incredible mood mixtures for The Dead Line Anthology and the Wavefront Anthology series has been instrumental in Electric Vicuna Production‘s tension. What music has added to your experience of audio drama?

Hartnell! Do you Hear That? Free Music!

KhartnellKevin Hartnell’s music in the audio drama world is right up there with other greats like Kevin MacLeod from Incompetech, Jeffrey Gage from Colonial Radio Theatre, Peter Van Riet from Epic Audio and Sharon Bee from EVP.

Dramatic Students

deathofasmThe Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch School of the Arts has an exciting opportunity for students to create professional radio drama. HarperAudio worked with Goldberg to create a contest for burgeoning audio dramatic writers.

According to this NYU News article:

Undergraduates, graduate students and alumni who graduated no earlier than 2013 can submit their pieces to the NYU Radio Play Contest via email by March 1. Submissions will be judged based on narrative quality and writing style, among other criteria.

Ana Maria Allessi, Vice President of Digital Innovation and Publisher at HarperAudio believes that the submissions should be natural extensions of the students’ current work. The winner will receive 25 percent of net profits of total digital recordings sold and 10 percent of total CD units sold. HarperCollins, a publishing company since the 50’s has all the specified terms and conditions and exclusive rights distribution rights to the winning piece.

How Well Can You Hear Quality?

nprNPR asks the question “Can you hear quality audio?” with this interesting series of music segments that included compressed and uncompressed elements of songs, Jacob Ganz challenges you to pick the WAV. Go ahead, and take the test! We’re not afraid to say that we failed, but then again, none of these clips are audio drama!

Dick Dynamo the 5th Dimensional Music ExperienceFrom the minds of Jon Baker and the other good folks at Dick Dynamo comes “Dick Dynamo, the 5th Dimensional Music Experience”.

There are many types of modern audio drama companies out there. Many companies offer a variety of fair, and some precious few focus on one or two ideas to put all their efforts in a concept.

The good folks at Dick Dynamo are in the latter camp, and it shows. The episodes of Dick Dynamo are cleverly written, lovingly acted, and produced with such panache and style that you could set your watch to their accuracy.

In fact, the one complaint that could be made against Dick Dynamo, is that there’s simply not enough shows to sate the hunger for more!

Enter in Dick’s Musical Experience, that once again mirrors the affection the team has for this series. This fun album is filled with great beats, hilarious lyrics, and many more reasons for everyone to download and enjoy these tunes before they are no longer offered free and snatched up by some record label!
