Writers Write!

624RTÉ and Northern Ireland Screen are looking for writers for online dramas and comedies. Check out this link from the BBC Writing Room website.

RTÉ and Northern Ireland Screen are seeking submissions from writers and producers to develop five new, original online dramas for the new season of Storyland.

Writers from the worlds of television, film, theatre, literature, documentary and journalism are sought, whether or not they have previously written for film or TV.

And there’s more good news for writers! In a change to previous years, the writer will be at the centre of the drama. RTÉ and Northern Ireland Screen will commission five scripts and work closely with the writers and producers on their development. Once the scripts are ready for pre-production, directors will be contracted. In total, five single dramas of up to 20 minutes duration – and each with a budget of €30,000 – will be commissioned and shown both nationally and internationally on RTÉ Player.

Want to find out more? There’s an explanatory open day in Dublin on Wednesday, 21st September and another in Belfast on Thursday, 22nd September. (Further details below).

The closing point for Storyland submissions is noon on Thursday, October 13th, 2016 (Irish Standard Time).

It’s essential you establish exactly what the organisers require and you can get the necessary information plus details about how to apply at the official Storyland website.

Whisper Me a Story

Teknikal Torments

Torment Tides of Numenera headerThe incomparable Cayenne Chris Conroy from Tek Diff did some of his usual vocal magic the upcoming Torment: Tides of Numenera this past summer. How many of us will buy it, just to hear him?

Check out how awesome the game sounds in this PCGamesN Review:

The world of Torment may well be the most imaginative gaming has ever seen. ‘Any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic’ said Arthur C. Clarke, and it’s a law that developers inXile have run with. The Ninth World is neck-deep in ‘magic’, AKA technology from a billion years in the future, and you can tell that the writers have had a riot of a time creating it.

The Rise Of Audio Drama

My focus in the last week, has been increasing the amount of audio drama heard on the station. The first thing I did was ask the community, and they delivered. I was inundated with lots of companies wanting their productions and series played out on the station. It is important to know that we negotiate with every company, as each have their own conditions. I had a few issues during the talks, but they were quickly sorted out. Many companies are concerned that we might run ads on the stream, and thus earn money from their content. This is not the case, and I have explained this previously. We are run by a series of donations, funding and from my own pocket. After all of the conversations that have taken place this week, I am pleased to announce that we have secured a number of series and productions, all of which are listed below.

Although we have taken on a large variety of new programming, we are still open to welcoming more audio drama companies into the fold. If you’re a company or organisation that are interested in getting some extra exposure, then do not hesitate to contact us!

Wired Magazine made a point that horror and sci-fi has given a new rise to Podficts– fictional podcasts. The idea that people are doing effectively narrative audio stories (even going as far as audio drama) to tell stories to their listeners. We’ve listed many in the past two years, but the number seems to be growing!

From the article:

DAN POWELL VANISHED in January 2016. Before he did, though, the audio archivist sent his friend Mark a set of tapes, chronicling his attempts to organize a series of audio interviews that had been recorded at a creepy apartment building 20 years earlier. The podcast chronicles each approaching footstep, each rat scurrying by—and each realization that dawns as Dan learns more about the sinister song that affected the lives of the building’s eccentric residents back in the 1990s. If you want to see what he saw, though, you’ll have to imagine it yourself: Dan is the fictional protagonist of Archive 81, a found-footage horror podcast.

The real Dan Powell is also an audio archivist, although he denies any haunted recordings or horror experiences. Instead, he spends his days reviewing different sound effects for Soundsnap, an online commercial sound library. “I listen to thousands of different door slams,” Powell says. “I thought, is there a way to take a work environment of listening to weird sounds, and put a horrific twist on that?”
